Electric Loog Pro review summary

The 3 string guitars made by Loog are designed specifically with kids 6-12 in mind. The electric Loog is made of quality materials, but intonation is off. The supplied flash cards and app are nice to have, but your child will still need your help in learning.

The Loog Pro Electric is an innovative electric guitar for children who are just starting to learn to play the guitar. Actually, electric guitars this small with such good sound quality are incredibly difficult to come across.

It would make a great choice for kids at the age of 8 and beyond although younger kids can also use it. The guitar comes with flashcards, as well as an app that will be quite useful for your kid during the learning process.

It also has a remarkable feel and appearance, and the sound it produces is just as impressive.

Features and opinion of the Loog Pro electric guitar

The Loog Pro is a 3/4 sized electric guitar that features three strings (like the acoustic Loog), as opposed to the usual six. The tuning is G B E, which is the tuning of the higher 3 strings on a normal 6 string guitar.

The body is shaped in a nice, post-modern, futuristic look, though there’s a definite level of vintage about it. This guitar comes in a range of cool colors including green, magenta, black, white, red, yellow, and lucite.

Playability

Loog makes uniqe guitars for kids.

The prominent characteristic, aside from the size, that makes Loog Pro Electric such a great choice for children is the very slender neck.

Generally, kids find it hard to wrap their fingers around standard-sized guitars, something that poses a challenge when it comes to forming chords. The neck of the guitar is very thin because it only has three strings, it is made specifically for the little hands of children.

Sound

Although the Loog Pro is small in stature and lightweight compared to a standard guitar, it produces a great sound that could easily be mistaken for a real electric guitar. This depends on your amplifier as well though.

Electronics

The Loog Pro only has a single coil pickup, but it is sufficient when you factor in the intended audience. In essence, the pickup produces a nice, clean sound and I had no qualms with the volume or tone of the guitar. The placement of the pickup is spot on.

Workmanship

It might not be the most affordable guitar to buy your kid, but you’ll realize that it is manufactured using quality material. The workmanship of this instrument offers great value for your money.

The Loog Pro also seems durable, which is a great feature for children. Even if your kid were to toss it around, it may get knocked out of tune, probably suffer a few dents but it won’t break.

Loog Flashcards and lessons

This fun electric also comes with adorable flashcards that most kids will instantly be attracted to.

Your child will quickly learn how to play the guitar with the help of the flashcards, as well as the Loog App available on your Android or iOS smartphone. It has tuner functionality, some audiovisual lessons, and a songbook containing famous songs by the Beatles, Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift, etc.

About Loog Guitars

Loog is a New York-based guitar company, founded by music teacher Rafael Atijas. Loog started out as an idea, which received funding from Kickstarter in 2011. The founder wanted to create an easier way for kids to be able to learn the guitar, which is why he came up with the 3-string concept.

For the initial Kickstarter project, there was only 1 Loog acoustic guitar.

They launched a 2nd Kickstarter project in 2017m where they debuted an improved version of the original Loog acoustic (Pro) and a new Loog Mini version.

The Loog electric guitar made its debut on this 2nd Kickstarter campaign.

What customers say about Loog Pro electric guitars

SInce its debut on Kickstarter, Loog guitars have been sold in stores and Amazon as well. Here are a few reviews of customers who have purchased the electric Loog.

One customer thought the guitar was nice, but the teaching app was not well made. There were too few lesson videos. His son had problems learning from the app.

Another Amazon customer like the idea that Loog offers. He said the guitar is well made (in China), but noted that the fret ends were sharp. Also, he complained of the low output of the pickup. He tried it on a low wattage 5 watt amp, but the guitar did not sound good on it. It sounded fine on a higher watt amp though.

A customer commends the guitar build and quality, but thinks it is a bit overpriced for a guitar of this size. Factoring in the cost of an amplifier, it comes out to well above $200.

Another Amazon customer talks about how fun it is to play on this small guitar, even as an adult. It is a sturdy guitar, not a toy. It plays like any other guitar does, but it’s much smaller.

Final verdict

This 3-stringed guitar was designed for young kids. If your little one has already made some progress in the art of playing guitar, this might not be the instrument for you.

And remember: given that it is an electric guitar, you will need to find a practice app if you hope to get maximum use out of it. Nonetheless, you will be able to play it without plugging it into an amp, but it will not sound good like that. If you don’t plan on buying an amp, you should get an acoustic guitar instead.
